Freshers Camp 2000
In attendance were: Cat, Carrie, Sarah, Helmet, Simon, Andy, Zoe, Graham, Gordon, Martin and the other Andy!!
Venue: Oaks Campsite, Shepshed.
It was Saturday morning as people gradually accumulated in front of the beam engine, ready for the first weekend camp of the year. A short bus journey later and after an equally short walk, we entered Oaks Campsite and attempted to pitch our tents on some relatively flat ground.
Following a brief lunch we set about doing a bit of pioneering. We thought about building bridges, tree houses and death slides, but settled on the idea of building a catapult. Either for catapulting cubs or rocks at moving objects. In the end we decided it might be safer and easier to turn the A frame into a swing, which took on several forms and held up to 4 people at one point.
Helmet arrived mid afternoon and set up the Scogui tent. Whilst the others collected firewood and Cat chatted away on her mobile, it turned out to be quite a common activity for her during weekend.
Dinner consisted of spag bol followed by custard and cake. Having eaten our fill, a couple of us set about lighting a rather damp campfire without the aid of flammable liquids! Mean while a trip to the off-license was arranged. Which would have been an otherwise simple task, had Simon not tried to get in the wrong car with some random driver in the front, for the return journey.
Once everyone had had enough of marshmallows, chocolate and alcohol we sat round the fire chatting and watching Carrie and Cat’s bottles melt. We got to bed between 1 and 2am, and were then woken at 3am when Carrie received a random phone call on her mobile, which sounded as if she was talking in her sleep as you could only hear one side of the conversation.
The next day, after a reasonable lye-in we spent several hours cooking and eating breakfast, which consisted of cereal, bacon, eggy bread and beans. Sarah managed to cook her finger on the grill while trying to relight the stove, but decided it wasn’t such a good idea, as it didn’t taste so good.
With both breakfast and then another light lunch over we packed up camp and loaded the cars for the return journey. Luckily we managed to just escape the campsite before the onslaught of cows was brought down the field.
The post camp social was held in JC’s and between bouts of singing from the Lufbra Rugby Team and a particularly pissed rugby player trying to be social with us, we recollected over the weekend camp and talked about forthcoming events.
