SCOGUI Freshers’ Blog 2017!!

So it’s that time of year again when thousands of students across the country have just finished that whirlwind of emotions that culminates with a notorious envelope on a Thursday morning to finally see if those toilsome hours of revision have paid off.

Well if you’re looking at this page then we certainly hope they have paid off as you either are joining – or are certainly hoping to join the Loughborough family of students!  – Obviously the best community of students and there is certainly no bias here!

When sitting down to write a blog post it is always hard to choose what to talk about for the first one however there is certainly one thing that I can tell you that will hold true wherever your results may take you and that is to get involved in as much as possible! Hear at Loughborough there are well over 100 societies ranging from Gliding to Disney to suit any interest that you may have… and of course there is always SCOGUI!

Societies are a great way to meet new people who aren’t necessarily in your hall or on your course but share a common interest with you and enjoy doing similar things. Run by student committees, each society will make you feel like you have a home away from home – however far away that may be!

Here at Loughborough you’ll be introduced to all of these societies at the Freshers’ Bazaar on the 1st  October where you’ll be inundated with information, leaflets and invited to the plethora of “give-it-a-go” activities that societies will be running to welcome in prospective members and give you a chance to try things out before joining. You’ll also have the chance to fulfil every student’s purpose in life and get hold of a mountain of freebies before term starts to stock up your supply of biros for the coming year! (If you come and see SCOGUI then we’ll have smores on offer!!!)

Hopefully that has started to whet your appetite for coming to university and you’re not too anxious about next week.

If you’re keen then you’ll be able to find the remains of last year’s SCOGUI blog in these pages which contains lots of useful tips and advice for what the coming weeks may bring and will also give you a taste of things to come as SCOGUI’s fresher’s blog continues over the coming weeks.

To finish off SCOGUI would like to wish everyone the Congratulations on their results and if you want to know more about SCOGUI, then browse through the rest of the website. If you have any questions about student life, courses, halls, or anything about Loughborough, post a comment or get in touch on our Facebook page, or Twitter feed, there will be someone to give you an answer, as we’ve all been through this before!

10 Things you can definitely look forward to as a Fresher!!

For this Blog post we’ve decided to compile a list of the ten things that we think you should definitely be looking forward to when you arrive in Loughborough for Freshers!! If you think we’ve missed anything then remember to get in touch!

Being completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of activities on offer

So we’ve said this before and it’s sure to come up again at some point but one of the things that makes Loughborough so great is its Societies section. There are well over 100 societies here at Loughborough, each offing you the opportunity to take part in a different activity as well as a platform to meet new friends and socialise. On the 2nd October you’ll be taken down to the Societies Bazaar where you’ll have the chance to meet them all and make up your mind as to those you’d like to have a go at.

Attaining an overwhelming sense of satisfaction when you accomplish something simple by yourself for the first time.

Some of you might see this one as just being an excuse to use this picture; (well maybe it is but can you really blame me!) but the truth is that, for many of you, University will seem daunting as it is your first prolonged period away from the sanctity of home. You’ll be doing things for yourselves for the first time and you’ll make memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Making friendships that will last for an eternity

University is probably your first real opportunity since year 7 to mingle with people who you will never have met before. You’ll be living with them, cooking with them, eating with them and who knows what else! It’s no surprise then that you can be assured to make a whole new friendship group – many of whom you’ll keep in touch with for the rest of your life.

Cooking a new recipe and it working!

So the vast majority of you will be catering for yourselves at least for part of the week and we all know the horror stories of student cookery. But every now and then a little gem will come along that is most definitely a keeper – who knew that Pancakes, Beef mince and banana sauce could be combined into such an amazing meal (you should really try it some day!!)

Freebies and Student Incentives

Those of you who have read our last blog post will know of a few of the freebies that are on offer to you but you’ll undoubtedly find a whole host of other things during your time as a Fresher. Whether it be student discounts, free nights out or whatever else you might be able to find then you should embrace it and certainly look forward to finding something new around the corner

(you can find our ‘Freebies’ blog post here: )

The Midlands

Now this may well have been one of the things that attracted you to Loughborough in the first place but it is certainly in an amazing spot geographically. You’re only a few hours from central London on the train and for those of you who are more into the great outdoors it is only a short hop to the Peak District for some exploring. Loughborough doesn’t really get any horrendous weather and you can definitely look forward to a whole host of ‘slightly overcast’ symbols on the weather map.

The seemingly endless number of ways there are to cook a potato.

This is probably more relevant to those of you in catered halls but you would be amazed at the number of different ways that Imago (the student catering company) have found to feed you potatoes! Whether they come chipped, mashed or croquets (and not to forget the approximately 20 other varieties) you can be certain that you’ll have no shortage of potatoes during your stay at Loughborough.

Discovering a new part of Campus to explore in the summer term when you think you’ve found everywhere already

Now this is something not just to look forward to during your first year. I can guarantee that third and fourth year students are still getting this feeling when they venture to previously unexplored areas on campus. Burleigh Woods, the Garden of Remembrance and the rooftop area of the electrical engineering building are all there to be found when you get the chance.

Establishing yourself in your new home.

There is no getting away from the fact that Loughborough is going to become your new home for at least the next three years and that is something to relish as you prepare to fly the nest. You will find your favourite places to go on a Friday evening, make your own mark on your accommodation and find your favourite snack for a midnight feast. For some of your this will take seconds – others maybe a little longer – but however long it takes you remember to enjoy the experience and make the most of this once in a life time opportunity.

Joining SCOGUI!!

Need I Say More!… SCOGUI as a society prides itself on being up for trying everything and will give you an experience like no other. There’s no real way we can describe it without a distinct over-use of superlatives but we cannot stress enough how much you will get out of it. If you’re in any doubt, come along and find us at the Freshers’ Bazaar where we’ll feed you and give you all the information you need.

As ever if you have any questions about SCOGUI, societies or university life in general then please do not hesitate to get in touch either via the comment feature below or through any of our social media channels and we will do our best to reply and get you an answer.

So even the most discerning and highbrow students cannot resist a good freebie and neither can SCOGUI – that’s why we’ve put together a list of the useful freebies that we’ve come across in our time at university.

Check out the below and if you think we’ve missed anything then feel free to comment or let us know on social media so that we can make this resource even more useful!!

Microsoft Office 2016

Why pay a fortune for Microsoft Office when it is available to you for free!!

Loughborough University is providing Microsoft Office to every student free of charge. This means the latest version of the full Office productivity suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and more available for offline and online use to best prepare you for class. As long as you’re a student here and the program continues, you’ll be able to use this software for free. Install on up to 5 compatible PCs and Macs, plus 5 tablets (including iPad!). Click on the link below to download your free copy.

Access to Student Discounts

Now that you’re a university student you’ll be able to access even more student discounts than you may have already been aware of at school. UNIDAYS is a brilliant resource for online discounts as well as STUDENT BEANS. Both are completely free to use and could end up saving you a lot of money if you use them wisely!

Student Rail Card

Now we’re not in the market for finances… but Santander’s student bank account is offering you a free 16-25 student rails card for 4 years. Saving a third on rail fares it is something that very few students will want to do without!!

There’s a few terms and conditions to this one so don’t just rush in, take your time to read them… but if you’re in the market for a student bank account then it is certainly something to think about!!

Now this subject is right up SCOGUI’s street and I’m sure will be music to your ears as well. Any large event on campus appears to come with a plethora of free food opportunities. Last year’s Sports’ and Societies’ Bazaars saw Dominoes out in full force to give away both slices of Pizza and vouchers to claim even more at their store.

That’s yet another reason not to miss out!!

Freshers’ Packs

Loughborough Students’ Union has been awarded the best student experience in 2016 by both the  Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey and Whatuni (who also awarded Loughborough the accolade in 2015)… And what better way to start your experience with a free bag of goodies. As a fresher you’ll be able to collect a Freshers’ pack from the Union building in the first week or so containing all sorts of freebies that are sure to help you on your way in Loughborough. We can’t tell you exactly what’s going in them this year (You’ll just have to wait and see) but you can be sure they’ll contain everything from maps, leaflets and calendars to pens, highlighters and maybe even a few more surprises to help you on your way.

Most halls will also have a few surprises lined up for you as well!!

One massive freebie that is available to Loughborough students – and many don’t even realise it – is a vast network of support services that are there to help you out in this new era of your life. Whether it be help finding accommodation for next year, help understanding a housing contract, counselling, finance advice or indeed advice on just about anything then it’s all available for you for free from the Student Services team at Loughborough.

This is something that outside of university you may have to pay an absolute fortune for so remember that if you ever need anything then this resource is there for you.

Freshers’ Bazaar

The two Freshers’ Bazaars (societies and sports) are both a magnet for the learned freebie gatherer. As well as finding out about the hundreds of student activities that are open to you at Loughborough you’ll be able to gather more free pens, keyrings, magnets and who knows what else than you’ll be able to carry without a bag – but there are usually some of those going free as well!!

SCOGUI is really looking forward to seeing you at the Freshers’ Societies Bazaar – and if you come and visit us outside then you might even get your hands on a free Smore!!
