Its that time of year again when Christmas draws closer and 2009 nears the end… students toodle off home (usually with a sack full of washing for mum and dad!) and university activity lulls to a stop (Except them PHD “students”). Scogui certainly have been busy bunnies this autumn term!
Since we last reported, we honoured halloween with a murder mystery night – complete with some cringeworthy name puns and spooky treats. Watch out for Pete & Fe turns out they were the ones who did it – but the guy that dude was a vampire anyway, so we aint too upset. The following week we skipped along to a dry ski-slope for some Sno-Tubing and some bonus tobogganing! Both proved to be a lot of fun – especially when going down the hill in a circle of 4!
After that it was mini-pioneering with bamboo sticks, a most fun night which saw a bunch of product designers putting the engineers to shame! Friday 13th then saw Scogui joining the rest of SSAGO in Leeds for the Emergency themed rally – all went well despite the date! Overall a very good rally, despite the lack of barn dance and chicken!
Back in sunny Loughborough, we got to know our own turf better by doing a town trail. A very fun night and a good excuse to wander away from campus for a while!
Next Scogui showed that we can do more than camping by gracing the dance floor. The jive dancing group from before returned to show us some moves; a fun time was had by all (not so sure how well the moves went down the following stupid tuesday!). After all the activiness of jiving, it was time to put on our best Xmas fancy dress and make like a brownie with some Xmas Craft! Though some of us struggled with the instructions designed for 5-year olds (or maybe that was just me…) and some issues with putty like glue (thanks tesco!), it was a fun enjoyable night.
Finally we come to our Christmas meal. We put on our best dresses and suits and went to The Maltings for some good old traditional festival foodings. Lots of food was eaten, secret santa’s were shared and we all went away feeling very Christmasy.

That was the end of the official Scogui Autumn Term. Although you will be sure to see us gracing FND with our presence to wave good bye to the autumn term and the deadlines it brings…. only to welcome in the spring term, and its wonderful exams.

Merry Christmas Scogui Friends.
Have a good Christmas Break, revise hard and see you all next term for it all to start again!

XoXo

The Scogui news writer has been a little slack lately and not reported on many of the things that Scogui got up to since winning their lovely award!!

Here’s a quick recap -

Go Ape ! Many Scogui visited Go Ape! in Nottingham and had a fantastic time swinging around in trees and pretending to be monkeys!

Summer Camp! This is a massive one – Scogui jumped aboard trains and spent a fun long week in camping in London! Organised by Mark P with our kit van driven by Fe! It was a great week so thanks to everyone involved.

Summer Rally! – Hosted by Bristol, a whole bunch of Scogui went south to meet up with everyone else from SSAGO. A fun (though slightly tipsy) and very wet (as in water fights, not rain) weekend was had by all.

Seaside! – Though out of term time, and not strictly a Scogui event, a bunch of friends from Scogui went to Southend for a fun weekend of beach, sun, arcades and wetherspoons.

I’m sure there were even more things too!

Bring on the new year

On the evening of Saturday 23rd May, 19 beautifully dressed SCOGUI members supper-ed in a progressive fashion – enjoying an expertly cooked course at one of four houses before progressing to the next. The starter, served at Gaz’s house, was a choice between melon and prawn cocktail with much bread available. A short trip down the road took SCOGUI to Megan and Nicole’s house for a very tasty main with choices between beef or vegetable lasagne and lamb moussaka. The group then proceeded on to Lisa’s house for tiramisu cheesecake and ice cream for desert. The suppering part of the evening concluded at Tom and Kate’s house for biscuits and cheese along with a selection of hot drinks. The excellent cheese was provided by Will and family. A fair amount of SCOGUI then proceeded to Loughborough’s both best and worst night club – Echos – where they danced away till the wee hours.

The 15th to 17th of May around 20 SCOGUI members ascended upon the Oaks Campsite to lend a hand at the Forest District’s Annual May camp, which this year hosted a party theme! Around 60 Brownies attended the camp – with each SCOGUI member being responsible for a tent of 5-6 of them. The camp was also attended by Forest District Guides – who mainly took care of themselves – and by a bunch of Rainbows as day visitors on Saturday.

(Click continue reading for a detailed report on May camp!)

The Brownies enjoyed a very nice camp fire on Friday night with some expertly led singing from Alice Cannon and Ashleigh with the occasional help from the rather enthusiastic Mark Harrop. The girls were often heard reciting the songs at the top of their lungs throughout the camp (mainly at 6am in an attempt to wake up SCOGUI…. ).

Saturday saw the girls presented with a range of activities – it being up to the girls to decide what they wanted to do and when. The girls enjoyed the Black Hole – a pitch black maze that you can only crawl through- (albeit with head torches) and the jungle trail assault course. Both activities were led by some very helpful SCOGUI who took it upon themselves to make sure that all the girls knew about Geoff - the Black Hole’s resident crocodile!

Also available were a range of crafts in the Clark hut that included party crowns, sparkly hair grips and a party pencil. The girls also went on a bear hunt (we’re not scared!), played scrabble in the woods and some small random games such as sardines. Saturday evening also saw the girls having their nails decorated and painted ready for their party – some male members of SCOGUI also had some very fetching designs on themselves!

Saturday night the girls had their party inside the Clarke Hut – all dressed in their party gear and with karaoke expertly led by Brown Owl Rachel. The girls played some traditional children’s party games –such as musical statues – and then were treated to some of SCOGUIs finest dancing to classic songs such as YMCA.

The weather was unpredictable and completely miserable throughout the weekend – however everyone took in it their stride (apart from a certain SCOGUI member who had forgotten their waterproofs and hence refused to get out of their tent at all on Friday night!)

And quite randomly…. for the first time ever, some ingenious person came up with the idea of using disposable trays and cutlery for the children – meaning no waiting for the Brownies to wash up and dry their plates in much over-used washing up water! Yay!

Somehow the girls were still not worn out and on Sunday some rather sleepy SCOGUI were woken up rather early again by singing Brownies. SCOGUI expertly helped the Brownies pack away their kit and put down their tents. The girls then played games for the day while SCOGUI cleaned the camp site and led the Guides on the black hole and jungle trail.

All the girls said they had a fantastic weekend and would not shut up about how great camp was at their next Brownie Meetings.

Extended thanks go to all the SCOGUI members that worked hard at May Camp – its clear how much all the girls enjoy it. Its clear that a camp of such a large scale would not be possible without the hard work from SCOGUI!
