The torch has now been passed over on the website! ... Just a little bit about the new SCOGUI publicity officer

Hi guys,

The torch has now been passed over on the website! With a new committee, and our wonderful publicity officer Vicki leaving, it is time for me to take over all things publicity! (Gulp!) So maybe I should introduce myself …

I’m KJ, first year materials engineer AND your new SCOGUI publicity officer! I am going to keep up with the regular blog posts, updating the website, Facebook updates, tweets and I’ll sort SCOGUI stash later in the year. I might change the website entirely, I haven’t made up my mind on that yet, and if I do I hopefully will not crash it!

In the more immediate I shall be looking to get all of the new committee members on to the page, so beware of me taking mug shots! (I already have a lovely one of Cainington Cain, our new chair!)

Time to run to a lecture!

Yours in SCOGUI

KJ x

(and if you hadn’t noticed, …. I very much like exclamation points!!!!)

Whilst I’m here, I’d also like to apologise for the lack of blog posts this academic year.

What is SCOGUI?

SCOGUI is Loughborough Students Scout & Guide Club. SCOGUI comes from SCOutGUIde. We are affiliated to SSAGO, which stands for Student Scout And Guide Organisation. There are SSAGO groups at most universities around the country.

What do SCOGUI do?

It’s hard to describe exactly what SCOGUI does, because we have a go at almost everything, but basically, we love to have fun, go on adventures and challenge ourselves to try new things. We meet every Tuesday evening, to do a huge variety of activities. Please check out the calendar to see the full programme. It is worth noting though, that some of our best activities happen in the summer term when the weather is a bit nicer!
We’re a really social society and there are always pub trips/parties/trips to the cinema being arranged through facebook. There are also four camps a year, the first being freshers camp in October as well as three national rallies.

What is a rally?

Rallies are SSAGO events held three times a year (February, July and November) and happen all over the country. In recent years we’ve been to Southampton, Cardiff, London, Leeds and Edinburgh. A rally is a camp over the weekend that SSAGO groups attend and take part in various activities, specific to the place we are visiting, for instance, last November, we went to London where there were trips to the Tower of London, London Dungeons, London Eye etc. It’s a great opportunity to explore somewhere new and meet other SSAGO members from around the country.

How much does it cost?

SCOGUI costs £15 to join, plus £5 societies insurance if we are the first society you join. This gives you access to all our meetings, though some events, along with camps and rallies do cost extra.

Do I have to be a Scout or Guide?

Nope!

Can you help me find a local scout or guide group to help out at?

Volunteering as a leader is entirely optional. However, if you do want to become involved in local Scouting and Guiding, SCOGUI can put you in touch with the right people. A lot of members are already volunteers and it’s a great way to get involved with the local community. Simply email the Liaisons Officer at liasions @ scogui.org.uk or come and talk to us at the Union Bazaar.

Do I have to wear a uniform?

Nope! Though we do have our own stash – hoodies, baselayers and t-shirts will all be available to buy in the autumn term.

If there is anything else you need to know, please email publicity@scogui.org.uk. Otherwise, we’ll see you at the Union Bazaar!

At the end of May, SCOGUI re-introduced the tradition of an annual dinner. There has not been one for many years, but as we head towards our 60th birthday in 2013, we thought it was about time the annual dinner was tradition once again.

In attendance, were current SCOGUI members, recent old gits, SSAGO members, the district commissioner and our most special guests, SCOGUI members from the 60s and 70s! It was such an amazing turn out, and we are so grateful for those who managed to come along.

The evening started with cocktail hour, then we moved onto the meal itself. The menu was as follows:

Homemade Ardennes pate with toasted bread, rocket, and red onion marmalade
or
Vegetable terrine with rocket salad and balsamic dressing
—–
Sliced shoulder of lamb, minted mashed potato and red currant sauce
or
Roasted vegetable lasagne, garlic bread and mixed salad
—–
Tart au citron with raspberry coulis and fresh raspberries
—–
Coffee and chocolates.

Following the dinner was plenty of time to catch up, share stories and have a bit of a dance, and several group photos were taken!

The above is a group photo of everyone who managed to make it.

The wonderful ScoGits!

The annual dinner would not have happened without Jamie, so a huge thank you to him for such a wonderful evening! If you didn’t manage to attend or didn’t sign up for the mailing list on the night, please email publicity @ scogui.org.uk with your name, email and/or address and you’ll receive periodic updates of what we get up to, including details of our upcoming diamond anniversary!!

Hi all,

For a while, I’ve been meaning to write a blog post on the wall here. I think this is a wicked way to keep a history of our events, news and stories, and so would like to try and use it more, hence a post!

One of my main ideas was to try and use this to keep you up to date with the Committee, what we are thinking/doing about things that actually affect you!

We had our first official committee meeting last friday, followed by the public house visit as is tradition.

Stuff we talked about:

Fundraising

Beaver/Brownie Birthday party

Logo

Summer Rally

Freshers activities

The minutes should be out by the weekend, so have a look and find out whats going on. Any problems/issues, you know where I am.

Cheers

Will

Monday 21st March was the annual SOCFED Awards Night, which celebrated all the fantastic achievements of 2010-2011 committees. Myself, Jamie (Chair), Megan (Liaisons), Tom (Treasurer) and Cain (Freshers Rep) as well as the lovely Boo Boo Bear attended.

The first award of the evening was for the community award, and it was not much of a surprise that we won it again! Everyone in SCOGUI who has ever helped in a unit or at a community event, this award is for you. We really do make a difference and you should be so proud of yourselves!!

Also, our lovely ex-chair, Jamie Shirra was one of the six people selected out of the many, many nominations for the extra mile award. Jamie truly deserves this recognition, congratulations!

Jamie with his extra mile award, look closely and you’ll see they spelt SCOGUI as SCOUGI.. unfotunately this was not the only mispelling of the evening!

Throughout the evening, we were able to enjoy performances from several different societies, including the Gospel Choir, Bellydancing and Fever.

We had a great night at the awards, it is a fantastic evening of achievements, and the free food and wine isn’t too terrible either!

Isn’t Jody’s suit AMAZING!?

Once, again, thank you to everyone who puts in their hours to make our community better, here is to another fantastic year!!
