Hellooooo!

Hi guys,

The torch has now been passed over on the website! With a new committee, and our wonderful publicity officer Vicki leaving, it is time for me to take over all things publicity! (Gulp!) So maybe I should introduce myself …

I’m KJ, first year materials engineer AND your new SCOGUI publicity officer! I am going to keep up with the regular blog posts, updating the website, Facebook updates, tweets and I’ll sort SCOGUI stash later in the year. I might change the website entirely, I haven’t made up my mind on that yet, and if I do I hopefully will not crash it!

In the more immediate I shall be looking to get all of the new committee members on to the page, so beware of me taking mug shots! (I already have a lovely one of Cainington Cain, our new chair!)

Time to run to a lecture!

Yours in SCOGUI

SCOGUI Annual Dinner 2011

At the end of May, SCOGUI re-introduced the tradition of an annual dinner. There has not been one for many years, but as we head towards our 60th birthday in 2013, we thought it was about time the annual dinner was tradition once again.

In attendance, were current SCOGUI members, recent old gits, SSAGO members, the district commissioner and our most special guests, SCOGUI members from the 60s and 70s! It was such an amazing turn out, and we are so grateful for those who managed to come along.

The evening started with cocktail hour, then we moved onto the meal itself. The menu was as follows:

Homemade Ardennes pate with toasted bread, rocket, and red onion marmalade
or
Vegetable terrine with rocket salad and balsamic dressing
—–
Sliced shoulder of lamb, minted mashed potato and red currant sauce
or
Roasted vegetable lasagne, garlic bread and mixed salad
—–
Tart au citron with raspberry coulis and fresh raspberries
—–
Coffee and chocolates.

Following the dinner was plenty of time to catch up, share stories and have a bit of a dance, and several group photos were taken!

The above is a group photo of everyone who managed to make it.

The wonderful ScoGits!

The annual dinner would not have happened without Jamie, so a huge thank you to him for such a wonderful evening! If you didn’t manage to attend or didn’t sign up for the mailing list on the night, please email publicity @ scogui.org.uk with your name, email and/or address and you’ll receive periodic updates of what we get up to, including details of our upcoming diamond anniversary!!

Societies Federation Awards 2010

A huge congratulations to SCOGUI for winning the community award at the 11th annual LSU awards ceremony for societies and associations!

The awards, which took place on the 23rd of March in Room 1, celebrated the achievements of LSU’s societies and the indivuduals involved in them. Room 1 was transformed into glitzy Oscars-esque venue, complete with red carpet, and the guests were treated to performances from the Gospel Choir, Hip Hop Society, Tuxedo Swing  and Fever.

Further congratulations to Nicole White, SCOGUI chair 09-10, for winning the extra mile award! A fantastic achievement!

Oaks Working Weekend December 07

On Saturday 8th of December, a cold damp morning, a small team of Scogui descended upon the Oaks campsite to lend a hand with some of the off-season improvements and repairs. The day started with Andy, Dave and Rich being given the task of cleaning and repainting the Clarke Hut kitchen. Starting well everything that wasn’t bolted to the walls and floor as removed and the inch-thick-in-years-old-grease extractor fan disassembled to be washed by Andy whilst Dave and Rich started the mammoth paintwork job. Joined briefly by Daz and later Rosie, the fearless Scogui workforce had the whole kitchen looking good-as-new before lunchtime, without many problems and without destroying too many ladders!

The afternoon saw new jobs for us; Dave and Rosie tackled one of the bunkrooms (too many jokes and innuendos can be made that are unsuitable for print) and Andy, Rich and Daz climbed into the roof of the ‘Black Hole Caving Experience’ ™ to reinforce the sagging roofing, which involved a lot of lying on backs with feet in the air whilst one of us did the nailing.

At the end of the day a lot of work had been done and everyone headed home for a well deserved rest. Bring on the Rifle Range!

District Night Hike 2004

Arriving in the early evening at Sutton Bonnington Scout HQ, Scogui began preparing busily for the Annual District Night Hike. Sutton Bonnington offered a Scout HQ, and sports field which doubled as a camping field for the evening.

By 6pm the Scouts and Guides started arriving, and Scogui got themselves organised. As the Scouts and Guides were arriving and getting set up, the heavens opened, and the wind got up causing some of the tents to journey to the other end of the field. Once the tents were replaced, the shadows and bases were briefed, and released.

From 7ish onwards groups of 4-7 were released at timed intervals, in both directions. The idea being that bases would recieve an initial rush, then have a couple of hours without any groups then the last few would come through on the way home at least that was the plan. Fortunately the weather improved as the the teams were leaving. By 8.30 all teams were realeased, so the remaining staff started getting themselves organised and the fully utilising my laptops music collection.

Me and Simon then started on the minibus, visiting each of the bases every 30 minutes or so, to monitor the progress of the teams. Unfortunately the navigation skills of the Scouts and Guides were not great, so some bases were missed and the route often ignored.

At each of the bases was an individual incident, or activity. For example, a Kims Game, or first aid simulation (which included interest from local motorists who thought it was actually a real accident – doh).

By midnight the first groups were coming in, but two groups needed picking up including one that was impressively 3 miles off the map in East Leake when found. By 2:30 all the groups were in, and Scogui did what they do best relax and argue that black is white.

In the morning it was an early start with the Guides woken up early, so the Scouts could come in. Food was courtesy of Ashleigh and Chappers, and sport provided by Barry. The morning was concluded with Ken Gee presenting the winning team (Castle Donnington, Sea Lions) with certificates, and the promise of a trophy to come.

Scogui/Loughborough Division Guides Swimming Gala

1st November 2003

After nearly 3 months of not very committed organisation, the date of the swimming gala arrived. I turned up at the swimming pool wondering whether any Guides would turn up, whether the races would actually work and whether I should just go home and sleep until it was all over… However, from 5:30 Guides started arriving – more than I thought would come – and we were able to get going.

Having installed myself as Master of Ceremonies, Keeper of Scogui Bear and Holder of the Microphone with the help of Kate and Martin who were keeping score we were able to kick off the first race, the width front crawl.

With the help of Amy, Antz, Brewer, Em, Jen and Paul to keep an eye on who came where in each race, Simon as official starter and Angela rounding up Guides we managed to keep the races ticking over nicely without too many embarrassing pauses in between, which was good because it meant I didn’t have to say too much!

The Guides’ races went well – 6 width races and 6 length races with events ranging from Front and Back Crawl to Running and Pyjama races. Once they were all over came something which until then had only been described as the frankly worrying ‘Grand Finale’. I really didn’t have much clue what we were going to do apart from the vague idea that we should have everyone in the pool at once being silly, so we divided Scogui members amongst the Guides, gave them a mat each to sit on and instructed the Guides to ‘push like crazy’! Em and her team from 14th Loughborough and 6th Shepshed came first, although there were whispers of a disgraceful amount of assistance on Em’s part!

While the scores were added up, at Kate’s insistence we had a Scogui race won by, surprise surprise, Ms Sharp herself! I must point out, though, that I did come in a very respectable 4th, even though I was viciously attacked by the lane marker half way down!

After the Guides had changed we presented certificates to individual race winners and announced the final winner – 7th Loughborough. Or was it 1st Diseworth? Hmm… best look at those calculations again!

After all the Guides had left, there was just enough time for Scogui to enjoy some swimming at the Division’s expense (sorry Lesley!) before heading round to Em’s for some pizza and silly games.

Thanks to all that took part or helped in whatever way! See you next year!
