Almost as good as five year olds

On the 31st of May we headed over to Thorpe Acre Scout Hut where we had a lovely evening of arts and crafts. Or at least it started out that way. By the end, the pyromaniacs among us had been well and truly outed.

We were supplied with tissue paper, card, glue and staples in order to construct chinese lanterns (they are supposed to look a bit like balloons, and when you put a tea light in them they float off into the night sky) Unfortunately, we didn’t get one to take off, but had a lot of fun attempts, most of which resulted in a smouldering pile of ash.

Eventually we ended up using a bin bag as a lantern and holding it over the fiery remains of tissue paper until it floated away. Slightly less beautiful, but still, I think points should be given for creativity, no?

We finished with a trip to the GB for drinks and darts. Thank you to James for organising the evening!

Progressive Supper

On a fine May day (not May Day, the day before May Day) a fair proportion of SCOGUI members (19 to be precise, with 1 SCOGUI relative), all dressed up smart-like, gathered at the swimming pool car park on campus to commence the food based tour of Loughborough that is known as the Progressive Supper.

We began with our first course, the humble starter, of a prawn cocktail, which I am told was rather lovely, some melons and, mainly for the vegetarians amongst  us, some lovely salad and grapes. This was located at the Kingfisher halls.

Then we moved on to our next course, a hearty main, which consisted of some rather delicious hand made ravioli, butterscotch and spinach & ricotta, in a tomato sauce with a side of garlic bed, see above. This course was held in Oxford Street

Then we moved on to our desert, on Paget Lane, where there was plenty of choice for all and a number of surprise treats, all handmade! Not only did we have the option of lemon meringue pie or a crazy concoction called ‘raspberry cheesecake brownie’ (exactly what it says on the tin, although it didn’t come in a tin), or both in the case of some of the more greedy/indecisive of us, but we were also offered Pimms jelly and the fantastically scrumptious ‘Cake on a stick’ (again, pretty much what it says on the tin. Well, not really, they were produced from a Quality Street tin. It’s just an expression!).

This was by no means the end as we then headed off to another house in Good Yards Close where we were treated to an incredible selection of cheeses and some port for which to make a fine round of toasts. Unfortunately we did not have our Chair and cheese master, William Brown, with us to inform us of the correct ways to cut and serve our cheeses ashe was bashing people with a foam sword in some forest somewhere.

Finally, a suitable end to a SCOGUI night, we ended up in the recently re-opened Generous Briton for our unofficial (unless you read the organisers paperwork) final course, the alcohol course.

Much merriment was had by all and, as the organiser, I would like to thank Gary Moore, Adam Lees, Megan Jones, Kayleigh Butcher, Ruth Jones, Vicki Minchener, Aimee Mollart, Jamie Shirra and James Waterworth for their parts in organising and cooking meals and lending houses to this delightful evening!

Easter Egg Hunt

On the somewhat wet Tuesday before we broke up for the Easter holiday, SCOGUI was sent off on an Easter egg hunt around campus! We split up into teams with appropriate Easter-y names. (Aimee, Cain and myself were the Easter bonnets!) We were given a set of photos which corresponded to locations around campus. Once we figured out where these locations were, we had to find a card with an easter bonnet and a letter on it. The letters spelt out the name of a chocolate bar, which we had to figure out at the end of the hunt.

At each of our locations, we had to take a photo!

There were additional challenges, which included:

  • Take an amusing group photo
  • Take a photo at 3 different bus stops
  • Make a sculpture and document it with a group photo
  • One of our three bus stop photos

These are just the photos from our team, there are plenty more amusing photos around on facebook I believe!

(I can’t remember who won? Let me know in the comments and I’ll update with the winners!!)

A huge thank you to Kayleigh (and Tom!) for organising this evening! It was wonderfully planned, and we all had a lot of fun!

    Backwoods Cooking

On Tuesday 22nd March, we ventured over to Thorpe Acre Scout Hut to have a go at some backwoods cooking!

The first job was starting up the fire, then we started preparing the food we were going to attempt to cook! We hollowed out oranges and potatoes, which we would cook eggs in and prepared a whole trout. We also split bananas, still in their skins, and poked some squares of chocolate inside, and finally prepared some dough which we would use for dampers (see:here)

We placed all our little foil parcels of food amongst the embers and waited for them to cook. You can see several bananas hiding in the embers in the photo below!

We attempted many methods for cooking our dampers, including wrapping the dough around a stick, putting it in foil in the embers and dangling the dough off string and ‘fishing’. Not sure which of these was most successful!?!

Of course, it wouldn’t be SCOGUI without the end of the night becoming progressively more silly, it is what we do best, afterall. If you blow flour (which we had plenty of, for making dampers) onto fire, it ignites and looks like you’re breathing fire, see Will having a go below!

Thank you to Dave for organising our backwoods cooking evening! It was excellent!

    Climbing at Alter Rock

On Tuesday, March 8th 2011, a selection of adventurous Scoguites jumped in some cars to go to Alter Rock Climbing Centre based in Derby, a truly beautiful climbing hall set up in a lovely church building.

After donning the ever-unflattering harnesses and climbing boots we headed into the hall, splitting up into groups of 3 or 4 and testing our mettle against the walls inside. Some of us got very quick lessons in belaying and learned quite how uncomfortable a harness can be at times.

Good fun was had by all and everyone left the building with a smile on their face. Unfortunately, no-one was sensible enough to bring a camera with them, so there are no pictures from the night.

Thank you very much Vicki for organising the event, it’s a shame you were not able to attend to see everyone enjoying themselves.

    Christmas Meal 2010

On the 14th of December, SCOGUI got all dressed up in their most fabulous outfits to attend our annual Christmas Meal. This year it was held at Goodliffes, arguably the best restaurant in Loughborough. We had a great menu to choose from:

Highlights were: Duck liver parfait with fig chutney and toasted brioche to start, braised rib of beef with horseradish & chive mash and pancetta crisp with bitter chocolate tart with Clementine sorbet for dessert. The food was delicious, and (I think) enjoyed by everyone.

Somewhere during the meal we exchanged our secret santa gifts! Which was, of course, very exciting.

Before we headed off to the pub/Stupid Tuesday we took our SCOGUI year photos as is now tradition. Here are a couple, the rest can be found on the gallery page!

A huge thanks to Dave for organising this fantastic event! Merry Christmas and a very happy new year!

    Have a wonderful break.

    Christmas Ready Steady Cake

This year, instead of Christmas crafts, we held a Christmas Ready Steady Bake challenge!

We were split into four teams and each team received a festive ingredient which they had to incorporate into their bake. The ingredients were:

  • Marzipan
  • Clementines
  • Mincemeat
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • After what was probably not long enough baking time, we gathered back together again in order for the tasting and judging to begin.

Here are the finished cakes (apologies for photo quality):

    O Christmas Tree

    SCOGUI Bear’s Countdown to Christmas

Sorbet Duck. He’s epic. And definitely belongs on a cake.

    Results were:

    Marzipan Figures: 11
    Christmas Tree: 20
    SCOGUI Bear: 12
    Sorbet Duck: 7

So, congratulations to team christmas tree cake! (sorbet duck team were robbed!)

Cubs Entertainer Badge, in which we are all 8 years old again

On Tuesday, SCOGUI took a trip down to Thorpe Acre Scout Hut in order to try our hand at a Cubs badge!

    Entertainer Activity Badge
To gain this badge, Cub Scouts must complete two of the following:

  • Help to make up a mime or play and perform it.
  • Perform a puppet play or shadowgraph using puppets which you have made.
  • Help to plan and make an entertainment recorded on video or audiotape.
  • Sing two songs.
  • Perform some folk or traditional dances.
  • Make a selection of simple rhythm instruments and use them as accompaniments.
  • Tell a story to an audience.
  • Make up and perform a dance to a piece of music of your choice.
  • Help plan and perform a series of magic tricks.
  • Take part in a show, concert or band performance.
  • We split into 3 groups and ended up with some amazing performances, including, story time, a human puppet play about snooker, lots of songs and some excellent dancing.

    Puppets in action!

Somehow, we passed and managed to earn ourselves a beautiful Entertainer badge! Well done everyone, and thanks to Jamie for organising the evening!

P.s I’ve added a little ‘like’ for facebook button on the bottom of each post, have a go, and don’t forget to login and comment!

    Freshers Events 2010

To our returners, welcome back! To our lovely new members, welcome!

We’ve had a great couple of weeks of freshers events this year and I hope everyone has enjoyed them!

We started with the freshers bazaar where we gave out a lot of free cake and cookies!

Our first event was our welcome campfire. We had a lot of fun singing some classic campfire songs and attempting to get close enough to the fire to toast marshmallows without melting our faces.

We followed the campfire with the traditional pub crawl. We visited The Paget, Amber Rooms, Hobgoblin, Moon and Bell before ending up at Stupid Tuesday. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, it was a great evening.

Still to come, see how our Freshers Camp went!
