On a fine May day (not May Day, the day before May Day) a fair proportion of SCOGUI members (19 to be precise, with 1 SCOGUI relative), all dressed up smart-like, gathered at the swimming pool car park on campus to commence the food based tour of Loughborough that is known as the Progressive Supper.
We began with our first course, the humble starter, of a prawn cocktail, which I am told was rather lovely, some melons and, mainly for the vegetarians amongst us, some lovely salad and grapes. This was located at the Kingfisher halls.
Then we moved on to our next course, a hearty main, which consisted of some rather delicious hand made ravioli, butterscotch and spinach & ricotta, in a tomato sauce with a side of garlic bed, see above. This course was held in Oxford Street
Then we moved on to our desert, on Paget Lane, where there was plenty of choice for all and a number of surprise treats, all handmade! Not only did we have the option of lemon meringue pie or a crazy concoction called ‘raspberry cheesecake brownie’ (exactly what it says on the tin, although it didn’t come in a tin), or both in the case of some of the more greedy/indecisive of us, but we were also offered Pimms jelly and the fantastically scrumptious ‘Cake on a stick’ (again, pretty much what it says on the tin. Well, not really, they were produced from a Quality Street tin. It’s just an expression!).
This was by no means the end as we then headed off to another house in Good Yards Close where we were treated to an incredible selection of cheeses and some port for which to make a fine round of toasts. Unfortunately we did not have our Chair and cheese master, William Brown, with us to inform us of the correct ways to cut and serve our cheeses ashe was bashing people with a foam sword in some forest somewhere.
Finally, a suitable end to a SCOGUI night, we ended up in the recently re-opened Generous Briton for our unofficial (unless you read the organisers paperwork) final course, the alcohol course.
Much merriment was had by all and, as the organiser, I would like to thank Gary Moore, Adam Lees, Megan Jones, Kayleigh Butcher, Ruth Jones, Vicki Minchener, Aimee Mollart, Jamie Shirra and James Waterworth for their parts in organising and cooking meals and lending houses to this delightful evening!
