Society Awards 2011 SCOGUI was so proud to win the community award for the third year in a row.
Freshers Camp 2010 This is our big ‘welcome to scogui’ camp, which is always a brilliant weekend. This year it will be on the 21st – 23rd October, put it in your diaries!

If you like what you see, the union bazaar on Sunday the 9th of October is a fantastic chance to find out more. We’d love to see you at our stall where we’ll be handing out flyers and free cake, as well as answering any questions you might have for us. It is also your chance to sign up to our mailing list so you’ll get details of all our tuesday events and freshers camp.

However, if you may not be able to make it the union bazaar, or are just a bit keen to get involved, simply fill in this little form and we’ll add your email address to the mailing list.

SCOGUI Publicity Officer 2010-12

SCOGUI is Loughborough Students Scout & Guide Club. SCOGUI comes from SCOutGUIde. We are affiliated to SSAGO, which stands for Student Scout And Guide Organisation. There are SSAGO groups at most universities around the country.

What do SCOGUI do?

It’s hard to describe exactly what SCOGUI does, because we have a go at almost everything, but basically, we love to have fun, go on adventures and challenge ourselves to try new things. We meet every Tuesday evening, to do a huge variety of activities. Please check out the calendar to see the full programme. It is worth noting though, that some of our best activities happen in the summer term when the weather is a bit nicer!
We’re a really social society and there are always pub trips/parties/trips to the cinema being arranged through facebook. There are also four camps a year, the first being freshers camp in October as well as three national rallies.

What is a rally?

Rallies are SSAGO events held three times a year (February, July and November) and happen all over the country. In recent years we’ve been to Southampton, Cardiff, London, Leeds and Edinburgh. A rally is a camp over the weekend that SSAGO groups attend and take part in various activities, specific to the place we are visiting, for instance, last November, we went to London where there were trips to the Tower of London, London Dungeons, London Eye etc. It’s a great opportunity to explore somewhere new and meet other SSAGO members from around the country.

How much does it cost?

SCOGUI costs £15 to join, plus £5 societies insurance if we are the first society you join. This gives you access to all our meetings, though some events, along with camps and rallies do cost extra.

Do I have to be a Scout or Guide?

Nope!

Can you help me find a local scout or guide group to help out at?

Volunteering as a leader is entirely optional. However, if you do want to become involved in local Scouting and Guiding, SCOGUI can put you in touch with the right people. A lot of members are already volunteers and it’s a great way to get involved with the local community. Simply email the Liaisons Officer at liasions @ scogui.org.uk or come and talk to us at the Union Bazaar.

Do I have to wear a uniform?

Nope! Though we do have our own stash – hoodies, baselayers and t-shirts will all be available to buy in the autumn term.

Committee-Meeting-Minutes-06.09.2011

This was our view when we woke up in the morning:

Beautiful, right? Our campsite was right next to the sea and we took full advantage of this with many visits down to the beach. On the second night, we had a BBQ on the beach as the sun was going down and it was a wonderful way to spend the evening – my personal favourite moment of the entire camp.

We really did get up to a whole load of different things during our week long summer camp, including:

Highlights were continuing the SCOGUI Go Ape tour of the country, surfing (definitely much harder than it looks) and walking around the beautiful Welsh countryside.

It was a super action packed camp so I’ll just leave you with some photos! There are also several videos that you can watch on our youtube channel.

A huge thank you to Mark and Megan for organising this year’s summer camp, and also, to everyone who attended and made it the wonderful week that it was!

In attendance, were current SCOGUI members, recent old gits, SSAGO members, the district commissioner and our most special guests, SCOGUI members from the 60s and 70s! It was such an amazing turn out, and we are so grateful for those who managed to come along.

The evening started with cocktail hour, then we moved onto the meal itself. The menu was as follows:

Following the dinner was plenty of time to catch up, share stories and have a bit of a dance, and several group photos were taken!

The wonderful ScoGits!

We were supplied with tissue paper, card, glue and staples in order to construct chinese lanterns (they are supposed to look a bit like balloons, and when you put a tea light in them they float off into the night sky) Unfortunately, we didn’t get one to take off, but had a lot of fun attempts, most of which resulted in a smouldering pile of ash.

Eventually we ended up using a bin bag as a lantern and holding it over the fiery remains of tissue paper until it floated away. Slightly less beautiful, but still, I think points should be given for creativity, no?

We finished with a trip to the GB for drinks and darts. Thank you to James for organising the evening!

Committee-Meeting-Minutes-27.05.2011

The Friday night started with a traditional campfire and plenty of songs! There was also a few games of Kubb (If you are unfamiliar with the game of Kubb, you can read about it here) and traditional late night cheese on toast (arguably the best part of camping barn). Then onto Saturday…

Saturday saw us attempt our most ambitious pioneering project yet. With our SCOGUI banner flying high, it was an impressive sight! For those less adept at tying knots there was also a swing, rugby and spacehoppers! This photo is a comparison of our pioneering project with the model we were working from. Not bad!

Of course, if it can be climbed…

In the afternoon, we went on a leisurely walk over to Rutland water. Rutland water is a beautiful spot with lots of grassy open space and a reservoir. A few brave SCOGUI members took the chilly plunge into the waters, whilst the rest of us stayed dry and played a spot of cricket.

We took a traditional group photo in the evening before the drinking began! There was classic ring of fire, a pass the parcel and plenty of bananagrams to keep everyone amused.

A huge thank you to Dave and Tom for organising camping barn this year! It was a great weekend, and if you weren’t there, I think it’s clear that you missed out!
