Christmas Meal 2010

On the 14th of December, SCOGUI got all dressed up in their most fabulous outfits to attend our annual Christmas Meal. This year it was held at Goodliffes, arguably the best restaurant in Loughborough. We had a great menu to choose from:

Highlights were: Duck liver parfait with fig chutney and toasted brioche to start, braised rib of beef with horseradish & chive mash and pancetta crisp with bitter chocolate tart with Clementine sorbet for dessert. The food was delicious, and (I think) enjoyed by everyone.

Somewhere during the meal we exchanged our secret santa gifts! Which was, of course, very exciting.

Before we headed off to the pub/Stupid Tuesday we took our SCOGUI year photos as is now tradition. Here are a couple, the rest can be found on the gallery page!

A huge thanks to Dave for organising this fantastic event! Merry Christmas and a very happy new year!

Have a wonderful break.

Christmas Ready Steady Cake

This year, instead of Christmas crafts, we held a Christmas Ready Steady Bake challenge!

We were split into four teams and each team received a festive ingredient which they had to incorporate into their bake. The ingredients were:

  • Marzipan
  • Clementines
  • Mincemeat
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • After what was probably not long enough baking time, we gathered back together again in order for the tasting and judging to begin.

Here are the finished cakes (apologies for photo quality):

    O Christmas Tree

    SCOGUI Bear’s Countdown to Christmas

Sorbet Duck. He’s epic. And definitely belongs on a cake.

    Results were:

    Marzipan Figures: 11
    Christmas Tree: 20
    SCOGUI Bear: 12
    Sorbet Duck: 7

So, congratulations to team christmas tree cake! (sorbet duck team were robbed!)

    Christmas Meal 2003

In true tradition the Scogui Christmas meal, an evening consisting of lots of beer/wine/cider and a nice big Christmas dinner – although I’m not quite sure about the roast beef option as a ‘Christmas’ dinner but there you go, maybe I’m becoming a traditionalist in my old age :S

The meal this year was situated in the Warwick Arms – good venue, miles away for all the poor people who decided to walk! Thankfully we decided on a spot of pre-dinner sherry drinking and a nice taxi ride to the pub (although the taxi firm turned out to be somewhat useless). More drinks then followed and a damn good meal, with all the trimmings. An interesting game of musical chairs was played at the tables between courses (without the music) – thus keeping track of your drinks and spoon was a tricky business.

With hardly any room left for desert we soldiered on… The deserts consisted of a choice of Traditional Christmas Pudding, Chocolate Fudge Cake and Mulled Wine Terrine. From the photos it is clear to see we were full on roast turkey – playing with cracker toys and cream took over. Some lovely pictures on the photos page – who’s the scary man in the photo with a ring through his nose and Elyot – complete with cream and a pink party hat!

After the meal and several more drinks, you spotting the theme to this now, was a short journey back to the union for yet more drinks and some dancing to work off that dinner.

    Christmas Meal: The Swan

In attendance were: Geoff Hampson, Karen Price, Tina Addington, Simon Andrews (Helmet), Annette Zink, Ali Hutchinson, Nicola Sanderson, Andy Brewer (Pints), Barry Wild, Cat Taylor, Carrie Hammond, Hayley Bullock, Sarah Cooper, Simon Parr, Kate Sear, Adam Bakehouse, Graham Lund, Lee Dunnett, Lisa Collier, Martin Whelan, Tom Letherby

It was raining hard as we made our way to the Swan for our Christmas meal. We dried off at the bar as we waited for people to arrive and then made our way upstairs.

After saying our hellos we settled down for our soup starter, after which we all swapped seats and then tucked into a traditional turkey main course. During which Gav joined us. After a final mix around we finished off the meal with a choice of chocolate gateaux or Christmas pudding.

With the meal over, we set about taking random photos, listening to music and watching Martin do what ever it was he was doing on the floor!

We left the pub around 11:30 and while most of the freshers went back to do work! A few of us made our way to Pulse (Xstals) to continue the party until 2. After which we struggled home against the high winds to get some well deserved sleep.

I think it’s fair to say, a good night was had by all.
